The River State Electoral Commission has fixed October 5, 2024 for Local Government Poll to elect Council Chairmen and Councillors.
According to the Chairman of the Commission, Adolphus Enebeli, the decision is in response to stakeholders call for Council Poll in the State as the tenure of the previous council bosses and councillors has elapsed.
He made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission emphasised that it is time to respond to the calls from stakeholders for the conduct of elections following the end of tenure for the previous local government chairmen and councilors.
River State was embroiled in a crisis a few weeks ago over the alleged refusal of some Council Chairmen to vacate their seats at the expiration of their tenure.
The Governor of the oil rich state, Sim Fubara had constituted Transition Committees, a move that was rejected by Pro-Wike legislators in the State.
The notice of election by the State Independent Electoral Commission will calm frayed nerves and douse the rising political temperature in the State.
