The Nigerian Senate has approved a new bill aimed at enhancing the powers and autonomy of anti-corruption agencies, a move expected to bolster the government’s fight against graft and financial crimes.

The legislation, passed after extensive deliberations, provides for greater independence for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), including protections against political interference and clearer procedures for asset recovery.

Senators said the bill will also increase transparency and accountability in public office, strengthen whistleblower protections, and improve coordination among law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.

Senate President [Name] emphasized that the move was part of broader efforts to restore public confidence in government institutions. “We must equip our agencies with the tools they need to combat corruption effectively, without fear or favor,” he said.

Civil society groups welcomed the development but urged swift implementation, noting that legal reforms must be complemented by political will and enforcement capacity to make a real impact.
