Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were tragically killed Thursday night in a bicycle accident in New Jersey, according to police reports.
The incident occurred in Oldmans Township, roughly 50 miles from Trenton, when a vehicle struck the brothers. Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were hit by a car driven by a 43-year-old man who has since been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The National Hockey League (NHL) and Gaudreau’s team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, expressed their deep sorrow over the loss.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman described Gaudreau as a player whose passion for the game and exceptional skills earned him the nickname “Johnny Hockey.”
Gaudreau had a storied career, representing Team USA in international competitions and spending nine seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Blue Jackets in 2022.
The Blue Jackets released a statement expressing their devastation, noting that Gaudreau was more than just a talented hockey player—he was a beloved family member and friend. They pledged to support his family and the team as they cope with this loss.
The Calgary Flames also paid tribute to their former player, emphasizing the profound impact Gaudreau had on both the team and the Calgary community during his nine years with the organization.
Reports indicate that the Gaudreau brothers were in New Jersey for one of their sister’s weddings, which was scheduled for the following day.
The hockey world and communities connected to the Gaudreau family are mourning the loss of both brothers in this tragic accident.
