In a significant development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that corps members will begin receiving an increased monthly allowance of ₦77,000 starting March 2025. Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, made this announcement during visits to the Wuse and Garki NYSC Zonal Offices in Abuja. He emphasized the government’s commitment to corps members’ welfare and urged them to remain dedicated and disciplined in their service to the nation.
The journey to this increment has been marked by anticipation and delays. Initially approved in July 2024, with an expected implementation in February 2025, corps members continued to receive the previous stipend of ₦33,000 due to funding challenges. Carol Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, cited these financial constraints as the primary reason for the delay, assuring that efforts were underway to resolve the issue.
Amid these delays, corper Raye, a serving corps member, initiated a “30 Days Ranting Challenge” on social media to voice the frustrations of her peers. Through daily posts, she highlighted the financial hardships faced by corps members, drawing significant public attention and sparking widespread discussions about the allowance delay. Her campaign resonated with many, amplifying the collective call for timely implementation of the approved increase.
As the new allowance begins to reflect in bank accounts, corps members have taken to social media to share their excitement. Screenshots of bank alerts displaying the ₦77,000 credit have gone viral, symbolizing a moment of relief and validation for their patience and advocacy. This increase not only alleviates financial strains but also reinforces the value placed on their contributions to national development.
