The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Subomi and Wahab Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, over allegations of naira abuse.
The brothers have been asked to report to the EFCC office on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025. This follows a viral video showing them spraying naira notes while a police officer held stacks of cash during what appeared to be a promotional event for a new song.
The EFCC said the act violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits defacing or abusing the naira. The police officer in the video has been identified and detained for unethical behavior, according to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the officer would face disciplinary action. Public criticism of the incident has led to renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against naira abuse, especially for high-profile individuals.
In 2024, the EFCC stepped up efforts to crack down on naira abuse, arresting and prosecuting celebrities like Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest for similar offenses.
This case is the latest example of authorities working to uphold the law and protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency.
