In a pivotal move towards addressing the escalating issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in Kogi State, a team of lawyers from the Directorate of Gender-Based Violence at the Kogi State Ministry of Justice, ably led by the Director GBV, Stanley Enedomoh Atule Esq. recently paid a courtesy visit to the Hon. Commissioner for the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Momoh.
This meeting marked a significant step in fostering collaboration to create a safer environment for men, women and children affected by violence.
During this crucial dialogue, both parties emphasized the urgent need for immediate and effective interventions to combat GBV.
The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Momoh expressed her deep concern over the rising incidents of violence especially against women and children and reiterated her commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable populations.
The Director GBV, Stanley Enedomoh Atule Esq. outlined the Directorate’s vision for a collaborative framework to address GBV comprehensively, with a particular focus on prevention, prosecution, support, and rehabilitation.
One of the most pressing issues discussed was the critical need for a shelter for victims of violence in Kogi State. Currently, many survivors face the daunting challenge of finding safe spaces to escape abusive situations.
The absence of dedicated shelters not only jeopardizes their safety but also hinders their recovery and reintegration into the society.
Both the Directorate of GBV and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development acknowledged that establishing a shelter would serve as a vital resource, providing immediate safety and support for those affected by GBV.
This facility would offer a haven where survivors can access counseling, legal assistance, and rehabilitation services, allowing them to rebuild their lives free from fear.
In response to the urgent need for a shelter, the Hon. Commissioner noted that the State Government is already looking into the issue and that very soon a shelter and an orphanage will be established by the State Government just as the State Government has recently established a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Kogi State.
As we move forward, the partnership between the Directorate of Gender-Based Violence and the Ministry of Women Affairs stands as a beacon of hope for those affected by violence.
Together, they are not only addressing the immediate needs of survivors but are also paving the way for long-term societal change.
