Dangote Cement Plc has introduced a Safety FairPlay Initiative at its Ibese Plant, aimed at fostering a strong and sustainable safety culture and promoting behavioral change among employees.

The initiative, which will be rolled out across all Dangote Cement plants nationwide, represents a significant step in strengthening the company’s safety management framework. The pilot launch saw active participation from both management and staff, highlighting a shared commitment to safer work practices.

The Safety FairPlay Initiative is designed to create lasting cultural and behavioral change through a fair and transparent system that encourages safe conduct. Built on three core pillars—Recognition, Correction (Coaching), and Discipline—the program rewards positive safety behavior, ensures consistency in addressing at-risk actions, and promotes open reporting of incidents, near-misses, and errors.

At the launch, Dangote Cement Plc Technical Director, Mr. Anandam Duraisamy, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative, urging employees to champion a safety culture rooted in fairness, accountability, and continuous improvement.

“Safety FairPlay is about building trust, consistency, and accountability in how we manage safety,” Duraisamy said. “When safe behavior is recognized, risky actions are addressed fairly, and everyone is treated equitably, safety becomes a shared responsibility and a part of our daily culture. True safety excellence begins with people—their attitudes, choices, and willingness to look out for one another. Every risk spotted and every safe action taken strengthens our organization.”

Also speaking, Ibese Plant Head of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Mr. Elvis Akalusi, praised management for initiating the program and commended employees for their enthusiastic adoption of the initiative. He affirmed that Safety FairPlay would be fully integrated into the plant’s daily operations, with the support of all department heads.

“This initiative provides the tools, coaching, recognition, and accountability needed to make safer decisions. Its success, however, depends on our shared commitment—our courage to consistently do the right thing, even when no one is watching,” Akalusi added.

The Safety FairPlay Initiative underscores Dangote Cement’s commitment to embedding safety as a mindset and daily practice across its workforce, ensuring that workplace safety goes beyond policies to become a collective responsibility.
