The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced that a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, is currently being questioned at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is accused of assaulting an e-hailing (Bolt) driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
A trending video shows the lawmaker slapping the driver when he asked for the delivery fee, questioning if the driver knew who he was dealing with.
The lawmaker also allegedly threatened to make the driver “disappear” without any repercussions.
In a statement on Monday, the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said an investigation into the matter has started.
She added that preliminary investigation revealed that Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh when a dispute arose over the delivery method.
Adeh stated, “Alexander Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident took place on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
“The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.
The FCT Police Command has expressed serious concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude towards the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.
