President Bola Tinubu has called upon Nigerian graduates to leverage their knowledge and skills to enhance society and contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
This appeal was made during the combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), which took place at the university’s main campus along Nwaniba Road on Saturday.
He advised graduates to refrain from hastily pursuing opportunities abroad, urging universities to engage in innovative research that fosters national development.
“Education is the cornerstone of national development,” he stated, “and it must be both responsive and transformative to facilitate progress.”
He further remarked, “The government has made substantial investments in your education, equipping you to make significant contributions to society.
As you enter the world, I encourage you to become agents of positive change, utilizing your skills to uplift our society and contribute to Nigeria’s growth and global development. Resist the temptation to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Together, we can cultivate our own pastures to be equally green, if not greener.”
Representing President Tinubu, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Professor Owunari Georgewill, expressed concern that much of Nigeria’s research remains unutilized instead of driving impactful change.
He acknowledged the challenges currently faced by Nigeria but assured the audience of the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and alleviating their impact, particularly on the most vulnerable populations.
“I seek the support and understanding of Nigerians for the government’s economic reform programs, despite the challenges they present,” he added.
UNIUYO’s Chancellor, Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Maje, congratulated the graduates, emphasizing that adherence to rules and regulations has significantly shaped their success in character and learning. He commended the contributions of distinguished Nigerians and the university’s Governing Council, highlighting the importance of unity in supporting President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria.
