The Nigerian Senate has approved a new bill aimed at enhancing the powers and autonomy of anti-corruption agencies, a move expected to bolster the government’s fight against graft and financial crimes.
The legislation, passed after extensive deliberations, provides for greater independence for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), including protections against political interference and clearer procedures for asset recovery.
Senators said the bill will also increase transparency and accountability in public office, strengthen whistleblower protections, and improve coordination among law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies.
